Five Pointers for Enhancing Your Reading Comprehension

Reading skills are a crucial aspect of higher education. Students proceeding with a degree at the university level are required to brush up on the basics of the lecture before attending the classes. This factor is important, regardless of the student’s field.

As students have to attend multiple classes a day, the habit of reading the content for every subject can consume a majority of the time. As a result, enhancing the skills of improving reading comprehension will allow students to save time and effectively remember the content of what they have read.

In order to achieve the objective of augmenting reading comprehension skills, the ensuing steps can be followed:

1. Reading to Study:

The style of reading varies from situation to situation. When students read a novel or an article, they tend to skip the repetitive, unnecessary words which do not appeal to them. However, when reading to study, it is extremely crucial for the individual to focus on every isolated word and make active efforts to understand its meaning within the context.

Students can highlight the terms which they do not understand and consult the dictionary to find their meaning as they go along with the paragraph. It is similar to taking a professional dissertation help when writing on a complex topic. This allows the individual to understand the content and avoid falling into the traps of procrastination in the future.

When the person has the objective to read to study, it is extremely vital for the person to stay attentive. In contrast to reading for pleasure, reading to study requires the reader to get rid of all external and internal distractions. The student must study in a noise- controlled room and shut down their thought processes, which may interfere with the learning.

2. Set Goals:

As stated earlier, reading comprehension is essential for all courses at the stage of higher education. However, it is important for students only to tackle an amount of reading material which aligns with their mental and cognitive abilities. An individual taking on loads of reading material may struggle to retain a portion or even the entire content studied within the time frame.

Considering this, it is recommended for students to set specific goals for reading the material for a day. Individuals can create a schedule in accordance with their class timings. Based on this, dates to learn a specific subject a day can be assigned. This will prevent the student from overburdening their minds.
Having a limited amount of study material will further allow the student to have a higher motivation to read the material.

3. Make Comprehensive Notes:

Reading the material before attending its lecture further offer students the advantage to stay ahead of the lectures. When the student is aware of the terminologies under discussion, they can formulate questions to clear any query in class.

In order to effectively do this, it is recommended for students to highlight the key points stated in the books, and create comprehensive notes to discuss the material. Notes can be made on a separate file using a digital device such as a laptop, tablet or a smartphone. Using the soft copy version of notes makes it easier for the student to make amendments and edits during the classroom lecture. Students can effectively make the changes and add the professor’s lecture to create comprehensive learning material for themselves.

Additionally, the confusion faced during the reading session can be highlighted and the student can use a separate page to note down the questions. In case these inquiries are not answered in the class lecture, the individual can approach the professor instantly, after the class, to clear the concepts accurately.

4. Increase the Reading Speed:

Parallel to any other skill; reading requires concurrent practice. With time and frequent exercise, the student can increase the speed of their reading skills. To do this, it is recommended for the students to take up reading as a habit. This habit should not only be limited to course books, rather reading for pleasure, reading articles and blogs can also be included to retain the interest in the exercise.
The habitual practice of attentive reading can further leave a positive impact on the student’s ability to write formally. Reading the works of professional writers will introduce the student to a wide variety of terminologies which can then be inculcated in their writing.

5. Visualise the Material:

One of the most efficient ways to remember the reading material is to visualise the content as it is being read. When students imagine the content of what they are studying, they can utilise multiple senses to perform the task. This plays a significant role in a person’s memory and allows them to remember the material accurately.

All in all, to augment reading comprehension skills, students are required to read attentively daily while taking inclusive notes and visualising the content.
